Most habit apps give you a number that only you can see. That number has a weakness. On the day you decide to skip, the only person you have to explain it to is yourself, and you are remarkably good at accepting your own excuses.
Part of why counters work at all is that they turn a vague intention into something with a visible balance. Twenty-three days of effort sitting on the screen feels like property. People generally work harder to avoid losing something they already hold than to gain something they do not have yet, which is why a long streak is easier to maintain than a fresh one is to start.
The catch is that a private streak can be written off privately. You reset it, you feel bad for an afternoon, and nobody else ever knows the number existed.
Sharing the counter moves the cost of skipping outside your own head. Your partner sees that you did not check in. They are sitting at the same number you are, and your day off resets it for them too. That is a small, concrete, slightly uncomfortable consequence, arriving on the exact day you are tempted to skip.
It also cuts the other way, which matters more than people expect. On the days you cannot be bothered, the thing that gets you moving is often not your own discipline. It is knowing someone is waiting on you.
Accountability thins out as a group grows. In a group of ten, a missed day is somebody else’s problem and the social cost rounds to nothing. With exactly one partner there is nowhere to hide, and no ambiguity about who let the streak drop.
The most common way a shared streak dies is that the habit was too ambitious. If the bar is an hour at the gym, the first busy week ends it. If the bar is ten minutes of stretching, it survives travel, deadlines, and mild illness. Set the bar at the version you could still do at 11pm when everything went wrong, and raise it later if it feels trivial.
The mechanics of check-ins, invite links, and nudges are covered in how it works, and there is a short note about the project if you want the background.
